5 Healthy Baking Substitutes

Do you want to have your cake and eat it too? I have a sweet tooth so I want my cake..always! Sometimes it is simply about healthy substitutions rather than eliminating your favorite foods from your diet.

Just start with making one of these changes and you will notice the difference. Here are my top substitutions when baking :

1. Apple Sauce for Butter/Oil/Sugar

I am a big fan of this when I am baking, I use it when making cookies or cakes. For every cup of sugar, sub half a cup of it with applesauce. While one cup of sugar will pack 770 calories, a cup of this sweet stuff only has 100 calories!

2.Mashed Bananas for Butter/Oil

The consistency of bananas is ideal when baking, they add a lot more potassium, not to mention the amount of fat you are cutting in your cake. One of my favorite cake recipes that call for mashed bananas is my carrot cake. Recipe :  https://zaatarandquinoa.com/2014/01/11/carrot-cake/

3.Natural Peanut Butter for Reduced Fat Peanut Butter

The reduced fat versions of peanut butter may actually be more harmful to you than the normal ones. They tend to include a longer list of additives so whenever possible and not just with peanut butter, GO NATURAL!

I make my own and they are so EASY to make!  https://zaatarandquinoa.com/2014/07/18/homemade-peanut-butter/

4.Nut flour for Flour

This is perfect if you are following a Paleo diet or gluten free. Filled with so much protein and Omega 3’s this is a great choice when baking. My 2 favorites are almond flour which I use here https://zaatarandquinoa.com/2013/12/14/brownies-healthy/ and coconut flour.

5.Whole Wheat Flour for Flour

A no brainer when it comes to healthy baking, this can now be found in all supermarkets so make the change. Whole wheat flour is packed with more fiber that aids in digestion, even lowers the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

What healthy substitutions do you use when cooking?
